Hike and paddle — two trails, one archipelago
Since 2024 there's also a hiking trail through the Stockholm archipelago. Together with the kayak trail it opens up a new way to experience the archipelago: paddle between the islands, hike across them.
Same archipelago, two ways to travel
The Stockholm archipelago can be experienced both from the water and on foot — the blue outdoors and the green. Two separate trails make it possible, and they work beautifully together.
The Stockholm Kayak Trail launched in 2020 and is a network of quality-assured kayak routes of over 140 km — for those who want to discover the archipelago by paddle, at water level and between the islands.
Stockholm Archipelago Trail launched in 2024 and is a hiking trail of around 270 km across some twenty islands, all reachable by the archipelago's regular ferry services — for those who want to hike from island to island.
The trails share the same archipelago and the same core idea: to lower the threshold and make nature accessible to more people, safely and sustainably — ideally without a car.
The best of two trails
Because the kayak trail and the hiking trail move through the same islands, they can be woven into a single trip. A few ideas:
Paddle out, hike around
Paddle a stage, pull up the kayak at an island and stretch your legs along a hiking section before paddling on.
Water and land over several days
Plan a longer trip that alternates paddling between islands with hiking days ashore — a richer way to experience the archipelago.
By kayak or ferry
Many islands are reachable both by kayak and by the archipelago's ferries. That makes it easy to start or end a trip wherever suits you.
Stockholm Archipelago Trail
Stockholm Archipelago Trail is its own project, independent of the Stockholm Kayak Trail. We're glad to point to it — the more ways to discover the archipelago gently, the better.
Want to plan a hike, read about the different sections or combine it with your paddling? It's all on the hiking trail's own website.
Start with the paddling
Find a kayak stage to set out from, and read the safety basics before you head out — on the water or on foot.
